Gates documents DNV, Lloyd's Register (LR), Bureau Veritas (BV) and ABS type approvals for some of its MegaSys hydraulic hoses. Lloyd's Register certificate no. LR26445496TA, issued to Gates on 30.07.2026, is valid until 29.07.2031; it covers the use of the hoses as short connecting hoses in marine, offshore and industrial applications.

- Gates® EFG6K Spiral Wire Hose: 420 bar: Gates: for extremely high-pressure, high-impulse applications such as hydrostatic transmissions. Type approvals: DNV, LR, BV, ABS.

- Gates® EFG3K Spiral Wire Hose: 210 bar: For extremely high-pressure, high-impulse hydraulic applications. Type approvals: DNV, LR, BV, ABS; the LR approval covers sizes -20…-32 only.

- Gates® M2T Steel Wire Braided Hydraulic Hose (2SC): For high-pressure hydraulic applications. Type approvals: DNV, LR, BV, ABS (LR: -4…-32).
- Gates® G1 Steel Wire Braided Hydraulic Hose (1SN): For medium-pressure hydraulic applications. Included in the Lloyd's Register certificate (-4…-32).
Gates® WaterBlast water jet hose is not type-approved; Gates states that this hose is used on offshore oil platforms to remove marine growth with seawater. We explain which hose is suitable for fuel lines on board in our fuel article.
Which hose carries which approval?
The table lists only approvals stated explicitly in Gates documents: DNV, BV and ABS are taken from the marine type approvals table in the Gates MegaSys brochure, and the size and fitting coverage from the Lloyd's Register certificate (LR26445496TA).

How to choose
When choosing a hydraulic hose for a ship, follow this order:
- Approval: Find out the ship's classification society (DNV, LR, BV or ABS) and check in the table that the hose family carries that society's approval.
- Size: An approval does not cover every size. For example, the LR approval of EFG3K applies only to sizes -20…-32, and that of MXG 5K-XTP to sizes -6…-12.
- Fitting: The approval is granted for the hose together with the Gates fittings listed in the certificate (last column of the table). According to the LR certificate, the hose must be assembled in accordance with the Gates assembly instructions, and the replacement interval specified by the manufacturer must be observed.
- Pressure and temperature: The working pressure of each size is given in the size chart on the product pages. The temperature range is -40 °C to +121 °C for the EFG and MXG families, and -40 °C to +100 °C for MXT, MXT-XTP, M2T and G1 (G1 up to +121 °C intermittently).
Frequently asked questions
Does a type approval cover all sizes of a hose?
No. The Lloyd's Register certificate lists the approved size range and the Gates fittings separately for each hose family. For example, EFG3K is approved only in sizes -20…-32 and MXG 5K-XTP in sizes -6…-12, with GlobalSpiral fittings.
Does the approval also cover the fittings?
Yes. The approval applies to the hose used together with the Gates fittings listed in the certificate. The LR certificate also requires the hose to be assembled according to the Gates assembly instructions and the manufacturer's replacement interval to be observed.
Which Gates hoses have no type approval?
Gates documents do not mention a type approval for the following hoses in our range: Pro1T, ProV, 4XH, 4XP, G2XH, Pilot, GTH, MegaTech, GP80 Plus, Lock-On Plus, PS188, WaterBlast, Plant Master and J2AT. Consult us before using one of them in a line that requires an approval.
